The Albuquerque Amtrak Station, built in 1902, tragically burned down on January 4, 1993. The cause of the fire remains uncertain, with theories suggesting either a homeless person attempting to stay warm by lighting a fire or an electrical malfunction.

In the aftermath of the fire, a new Amtrak station was constructed at the Alvarado Transportation Center (ATC), which opened in 2002 and serves as the replacement for the original station. Notably, the ATC shares the same location as its predecessor.
