I believe you are correct about the prickly pear. I got “trapped” in the spines of a large clump when I was a small child and had to be carefully extricated by my mother. Not an experience one would easily forget. Am I correct in remembering that “cactus candy” was made from this plant? It has a unique (and probably acquired) taste. I liked it a lot.
