I am not a particularly religious person but there was something about this church that was very appealing. Maybe the colors or the architecture. Any ideas?

I like this photograph of this church. I think that the appeal to me comes from your position when you took the picture. It has all of the elements — circle, square and rectangle — in the composition and the color harmonizes quite well.
I think combination forms and proportion in human scale in this church with no ornaments whatsoever, just plain walls with choice of gradation color for the church makes this very appealing to me.
